Lady Eagles Fall to Lady Railsplitters 80-71

HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (14-13, 11-10 South Atlantic Conference) women's basketball team fell to the Lincoln Memorial Lady Railsplitters (15-12, 14-7 South Atlantic Conference) by a score of 80-71 at Tex Turner Arena on Wednesday evening.

The loss gives Lincoln Memorial a season sweep of Carson-Newman, and the Lady Eagles have now lost eight of their last 10 games.

Carson-Newman was led in scoring by sophomore Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.) with her 15 points, hitting three 3-pointers in the contest. Junior Whitney Kyle (Jefferson City, Tenn.) posted a career-high 14 points, as did junior Lashawnda Peacher (Springfield, Tenn.) who has now scored in double-figures the past four games for Carson-Newman.

Peacher also collected Carson-Newman's fourth double-double of the season with her 14 points and 10 rebounds, and it is the first double-double for her this season.

After Lincoln Memorial scored the game's first four points, the Lady Eagles came back on a 10-0 run to grab a 10-4 lead. The Lady Railsplitters climbed back with a pair of 7-0 runs in the final ten minutes of the first half. LMU carried a 41-32 lead over Carson-Newman at halftime, with the Lady Eagles shooting 41 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes.

LMU maintained and grew its lead in the second half. The Lady Railsplitters would earn their largest lead of the contest with 7:51 left to go, ahead 67-50.

Carson-Newman would fight back with baskets from Burstrom and Kyle, and at one point the Lady Eagles went on a 9-1 run to cut LMU's lead to 75-69. Carson-Newman would not get any closer than that six-point deficit, and LMU hit critical free throws down the stretch to collect the nine-point victory.

Overall the Lady Eagles shot 32 percent in the second half (13-for-40), and overall shot 36 percent for the game from the field. LMU shot slightly better at 40 percent from the field.

LMU was led in scoring by the 20 points of Aisjah Roan, and she was joined in double-figures by the 12 points of MaRanda Boddie and the 11 points of Katrina Ottesen.
