Lady Eagles Fall to Queens 69-64

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (14-12, 11-9 South Atlantic Conference) women's basketball team fell to the Queens Royals (6-18, 5-15 South Atlantic Conference) by a 69-64 score at Holt Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.

The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Lady Eagles, and the win for Queens was its first after dropping 11 games in a row following a win over C-N on Jan. 11, as Carson-Newman was swept by Queens this year.

Carson-Newman was led in scoring by junior Lashawnda Peacher (Springfield, Tenn.) as she scored a career-high 21 points, and nearly had a double-double as she led C-N with nine rebounds.

Queens began the contest on an 8-2 run, and the Royals would never trail in the first half. The Royals shot 61 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes, and the Royals were led in scoring by the nine points of Shonice Pettaway as Queens had a 36-32 halftime advantage.

Carson-Newman shot the basketball better in the second half, and climbed right back into the contest. After tying the game at 36 and 38, Queens pulled back ahead and led 46-40 with 12:40 left to go.

The Lady Eagles responded by going on an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to grab its first lead of the day. Kailyn Brooks tied the game at 46 on a layup before Haley Coffelt put C-N on top for the first time, 48-46 with 31 left to go.

Overall the Lady Eagles went on a 14-3 run to grab control of the game, as Carson-Newman had its largest lead of the day at 54-49 with 7:46 to play. The Royals weren't done, going on an 8-3 over the next three minutes to tie the contest at 57 with 4:55 to go.

From there, Queens outscored Carson-Newman 12-7 to escape Mossy Creek with the five-point victory. Peacher did make it a two-point game with 25 seconds remaining on a layup, but the Royals saw Abby Pettit make a pair of free throws to grow the lead to 68-64. On Carson-Newman's last possession, Jai Jai McLaughlin took the ball across midcourt and missed a layup with eight seconds left. After the Royals got the ball back, Pettaway hit one last free throw to put the final at Queens 69, Carson-Newman 54.

Pettaway led four Royals in double-figures with her 18 points.

Following the contest Carson-Newman honored lone senior Chante' Markus (Hummelstown, Pa.), who scored two points and went 1-for-7 from the field in her last regular season game at Holt Fieldhouse.

Carson-Newman will play its final two games of the regular season on the road, first traveling to Harrogate, Tenn., to face Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.

Wednesday's game will be carried on the Eagle Sports Network's flagship station WPFT-FM 106.3 FM, with coverage beginning at 5:45 p.m. with "The Countdown to Tipoff," and live audio is also available on www.cneagles.com.
