Lady Eagles Storm Past Cobras 71-63

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (4-1, 2-0 South Atlantic Conference) women's basketball team rallied past the Coker Cobras (3-1, 1-1 South Atlantic Conference) at Timberlake-Lawton Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

Once again the Lady Eagles had a second half comeback, as Carson-Newman outscored Coker 35-28 in the second half to improve to 2-0 in conference play.

"Great team road win," said Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey. "It was a physical game in a hostile environment and I'm extremely proud of how our team fought through some adversity to get the win. These players gat all the credit."

The Lady Eagles saw four players reach double-digit scoring, with the 14 points of sophomore Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.) and sophomore Jai Jai McLaughlin (Knoxville, Tenn.) leading the way. Burstom and McLaughlin were joined in double-figures by the 12 points of freshman Kaitlyn Cupples (Clinton, Tenn.) and Lashawnda Peacher (Springfield, Tenn.) who scored 10.

After Coker jumped out to a 7-5 lead in the early minutes, the Lady Eagles then embarked on a 14-0 run that was capped by 3-pointers by Burstrom and senior Chante' Markus (Hummelstown, Pa.), to give the Lady Eagles a 19-7 lead with 15:18 to play in the first half.

The Cobras charged back and the rest of the half was largely back-and-forth. Freshman Kailyn Brooks (Lafayette, Tenn.) hit a 3-pointer with two seconds remaining to give the Lady Eagles a 36-35 lead at the half. In the first half the score was tied six times and the lead changed seven times.

Coker grabbed the lead early in the second half, and grew the lead to eight points (53-45) with 9:43 remaining. The Lady Eagles responded with a 14-3 run over the next six minutes to take the lead for good, thanks mainly to made free throws.

The Cobras cut the Carson-Newman lead to 63-60 with 47 seconds left to play following a Hailey Yohn 3-pointer. Coker would get to within two following another 3-pointer by Tanesha Stenson, but the Lady Eagles put the game away at the charity stripe, scoring the last six points of the game at the line to win 71-63.

Carson-Newman shot 39 percent from the field, outshooting Coker who shot 36 percent. The Lady Eagles were also 19-for-25 at the free throw line, going 17-for-23 in the second half.

Coker was led in scoring by Stenson, who had a double-double with 25 points and 11 rebounds.

Carson-Newman will continue conference road play on Tuesday night at Mars Hill at 6 p.m. Tuesday's game will be carried on the Eagle Sports Network's flagship station WPFT-FM 106.3 FM, with coverage beginning at 5:45 p.m. with "The Countdown to Tipoff," and live audio also available on www.cneagles.com.
