Lady Eagles Fall to Wolves 83-75

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (12-5, 9-2 South Atlantic Conference) women's basketball team fell to the Newberry Wolves (9-6, 5-6 South Atlantic Conference) by a score of 83-75 at Holt Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.

The loss ends Carson-Newman's three-game winning streak, and with the loss and Wingate's 65-62 win over Brevard, the Lady Eagles and Bulldogs are now tied for first place in the SAC standings with 9-3 conference records.

"I don't feel like we had a lot of good effort and I could tell before the game that our energy wasn't good," said Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey. "That comes back to me, that's my job as head coach to get them to that fired up point, but it was really frustrating first half to get anything going offensively and really getting beat too easily out of the press."

After recording a triple-double on Wednesday at Tusculum, sophomore Jai Jai McLaughlin (Knoxville, Tenn.) once again packed the box score with a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

While McLaughlin recorded Carson-Newman's third double-double of the year, the Lady Eagles were led in scoring by the 14 points of junior Lashawnda Peacher (Springfield, Tenn.), with all of her production coming off of the bench. McLaughlin and Peacher were joined in double-figures by the 12 points of freshman Kaitlyn Cupples (Clinton, Tenn.), and senior Chante' Markus (Hummelstown, Penn.), who has now scored in double-digits in each of the past five games.

The first half was largely back-and-forth between the teams. Neither Carson-Newman or Newberry had a lead larger than four points in the first 20 minutes, and the score was tied 10 times with the lead changing hands five times.

Carson-Newman got off to a good start in the second half with help from Markus. She scored seven of Carson-Newman's first nine points in the second half as the Lady Eagles led 41-37 with 16:48 remaining in the game.

Newberry then began its best run of the game, a 13-0 stretch over the next three minutes to grow the lead to 50-41 with 13:36 to play. The Lady Eagles would never lead again in the contest, although Carson-Newman did get the game within a point, trailing 62-61 with 6:47 to play, then tying the contest at 65 with 5:30 left to play.

The Wolves took over for the rest of the game, eventually leading by as much as nine points thanks to free throws, and won the game by a final score of 83-75.

Newberry was led in scoring by the 24 points of Tasia Holdorf, and she was joined in double-figures by the 17 points of Zara Pearson, Haylee Lepaio's 15 points, Ellie Gleeson's 13 points, and 10 points from Emily Perry.

Carson-Newman's top scorer entering the game, sophomore Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.) was held to 2-for-12 shooting from the field, and she was 0-for-7 from 3-point land as she scored four points in the contest.

Carson-Newman will play their next two games on the road, first traveling to Anderson on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.

Wednesday's game will be carried on the Eagle Sports Network's flagship station WPFT-FM 106.3 FM, with coverage beginning at 5:45 p.m. with "The Countdown to Tipoff," and live audio is also available on www.cneagles.com.
