Carson-Newman Game Notes - King

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (1-1) women's basketball team will play their first road game of the regular season schedule, facing the King Tornado (1-0) at the Student Center Complex on the King University campus in Bristol, Tenn., on Saturday at 5 p.m.

The Lady Eagles are coming off a weekend where Carson-Newman defeated Lees-McRae on Saturday before falling to Barton 70-66 on Sunday in the SAC-Conference Carolinas Challenge.

"King gets better each year," said Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey, who is an alumnus of King. "They took some of the best teams in the Conference Carolinas last year right to the end and had a chance to beat them. They're going to play well at home, they are a good shooting basketball team and a lot of their players are from in-state and I'm very familiar with them. If we don't stick to the fundamentals we'll have a hard time beating King."

Carson-Newman led Barton 63-58 with just over three minutes left to play, only to see the Bulldogs end the game on a 12-3 run to hand the Lady Eagles their first loss of the season.

Junior Lashawnda Peacher (Springfield, Tenn.) led Carson-Newman in scoring as she scored a career-high 15 points, 12 of which came in the first half helping the Lady Eagles build an early advantage. Peacher was joined in double-digit scoring by freshman Kaitlyn Cupples (Clinton, Tenn.), who scored 11 points and she has now scored in double-digits in her first two games at Carson-Newman.

The Lady Eagles continue to be led in scoring by sophomore Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.), who hit seven 3-pointers as part of 23 points against Lees-McRae on Saturday. She is averaging 12.5 points per game after scoring only two points against Barton Sunday.

King won its only game so far this season 102-78 over Pikeville on Thursday night. The game marked the first time the Tornados scored over 100 points in over four years, as King shot nearly 60 percent from the field.

Chelsea Bowling led King with 20 points and she was perfect on all four 3-point attempts, as the Tornado went 15-for-24 from behind the arc in the victory.

King, coached by Josh Thompson, was picked to finish fourth in the preseason Conference Carolinas coaches poll.

Saturday night's game will be carried online on www.cneagles.com with coverage beginning at 4:45 p.m. with "The Countdown to Tipoff."
