Carson-Newman Game Notes - Lee

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (5-1, 3-0 South Atlantic Conference) women's basketball team will host the Lee University Lady Flames (2-0) at Holt Fieldhouse on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m.

The Lady Eagles have won their last four games, and this game marks the return to action for Carson-Newman following the Thanksgiving holiday.

"I think we had a nice break, and have had good two good days of practice and we're excited to play Lee," said Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey. "We have probably the best team we've had to play all year coming in here and we're going to have to be ready to play at 100 percent. It's going to take a great effort out of our basketball team to beat Lee."

Carson-Newman is coming off a 62-57 road victory at Mars Hill last Wednesday. The Lady Eagles, who trailed by a point at halftime, outscored Mars Hill 34-28 in the second half to secure its fourth straight win, as Carson-Newman is off to a 3-0 start in conference play for the first time since the 2009-10 season.

Sophomore Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.) led Carson-Newman with her 20 points, as she led Carson-Newman from behind the arc with four 3-pointers and eight field goals. Burstrom was joined in double figures by senior Chante' Markus (Hummelstown, Pa.) and sophomore Taylor Peterson (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.), with both players scoring 12 points and grabbing six rebounds for the Lady Eagles.

The Lady Eagles are led in scoring by a pair of sophomores who are averaging double-digit points per game. Burstrom leads the Lady Eagles by averaging 12 points per contest, while fellow sophomore Jai Jai McLaughlin (Knoxville, Tenn.) is right behind by averaging 10.3 points per game. Burstrom has scored in double-figures three times this season, with McLaughlin doing so twice.

Lee, coached by Marty Roe, is 2-0 to begin the season after beating Tennessee Wesleyan 90-51 on Nov. 16 and Auburn-Montgomery 82-56 on Nov. 26. The Flames have four players averaging double-digit points per game, led by the 22 points per game by Hollie German.

Lee's Jenna Adams is averaging a double-double per contest by averaging 16 points and 12 rebounds per game. In the win against Auburn-Montgomery, Adams scored 23 points and was 8-for-12 from the field and 6-for-9 from beyond the arc.

The Flames are members of the NCCAA and will join the Gulf South Conference (NCAA Division II) during the 2015-16 academic year.
