Dolphins and Blazers best Eagles in day one of Gamecock Invitational

COLUMBIA, S.C.— The Carson-Newman beach volleyball team dropped a pair of 4-1 decisions to Jacksonville and the University of Alabama Birmingham to wrap up day one of competition at the Gamecock Invitational on Saturday.  

"I am very proud of how far we have come thus far this season," assistant coach Kirby Toribio said. "All across the board, we are getting better and having fun. On defense, we are going some good things and I know if we keep working, it will come together for us."

Dual No. 1: Jacksonville 4, Carson-Newman 1

Carson-Newman dropped its opening round contest of the Gamecock Invitational with a 4-1 loss to Jacksonville Saturday morning.

The Eagles' lone point of the match came in the No. 2 pairing dual of Molly Locke (College Grove, Tenn.) and Maddie Borch (Walnut Creek, Calif.). The duo took down Mackenzie Swan and Cristina Finan 21-17, 18-21 and 15-13 in a three-set thriller.

Saturday's match against Jacksonville was Borch's fist action of the beach season.

Other than the win at No. 2, Carson-Newman struggled throughout the contest by not picking up another team-point on the day.

Freshman duo of Katie Will (Clearwater, Fla.) and Ally King (Cincinnati, Ohio) dropped only their third contest of the season in the first-seeded match as the pairing fell 21-9 and 21-18 to begin the morning play.  

Sara Fairley (Charlotte. N.C.) and Taylor Lowe (Franklin, Tenn.) followed with a 21-14 loss in two sets at NO. 3 and Kristina Hill (Lake Orion, Mich.) and Natalie Harris (Monroe, N.C.) dropped the fourth-round contest 21-13, 21-17.

Eileen Anderson (Pittstown, N.J.) and Megan Morris (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) came up short in the No. 5 match 21-9 and 23-21, while Hannah Robertson (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) and Allie Foster (Johnson City, Tenn.) rounded out the contest with a 21-13 and 21-12 exhibition loss to Jacksonville's Jizzy Gesualdo and Ashlyn Miller.

The Eagles second round of action Saturday afternoon resulted in another 4-1 loss. This time the result came from another Division I power in UAB.

Locke and Borch again tallied the only Carson-Newman team-point on the afternoon as the duo took down Amber Treace and Zahria Richard 21-10 and 21-13 in the No. 2 pairing.

King and will led things off for C-N in the No. 1 spot with a 21-14 and 21-17 loss to Sara Rishell and Chelsi Carter. Fairley and Lowe followed suit in the No. 3 contest, losing 21-9 and 21-7 to a pair of Blazers.

Harris and Hill came up short 21-11 and 21-14 in the fourth-seeded contest, while Anderson and Morris teamed up for a 21-18, 17-21 and 15-6 loss in three sets to end the day for the Eagles.

Carson-Newman will resume play in the Gamecock Invitational Sunday morning at 11 a.m. with a contest with Texas Christian University before wrapping up the tournament with a 3:00 p.m. match against South Carolina.
