C-N kicks off conference play at Wingate

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman (1-2) heads to Wingate (0-1-2) tomorrow for its first conference match of the 2014 fall season.

The Eagles are coming off a strong 1-0 win against Young Harris in their home opener last Wednesday. Senior Maleya Garrison (Hendersonville, Tenn.) scored the game winning and first goal of the season off a through ball from junior Mikayla Gregg (Newport, Tenn.).

"It was a good boost of confidence," graduate assistant coach Sarah Tompkins said, "for the girls to secure a win for our home opener."

Carson-Newman outshot YHC 10 to nine; Garrison released three shots, all on frame. Sophomore keeper Taylor Hammond (Suwanee, Ga.) totaled six saves.

The Bulldogs tied UNC Pembroke 1-1 after two overtimes last Tuesday. Brooke Howell scored her fourth goal of the year in the 70th minute to put Wingate up by one. UNC Pembroke tied it up two minutes later.

Wingate outshot its opponent 19 to 12 with 13 of their shots landing on target. Howell and Jade Montgomery each took six shots for the Bulldogs, four of which were placed on goal.

Last season, the Eagles fell 4-1 in their home opener against Wingate. The Bulldogs went up 1-0 in the second minute and took a 4-0 lead. Montgomery tallied two goals, Howell one and Kaitlyn Brunsworth one.

In the 85th minute, then senior Lizeth Munguia (Wilmington, N.C.) finished a deflection off Gregg's free kick for C-N's lone goal.

"It's going to be a good match up," Tompkins said, "for our first conference game. We've had a chance to see more players get time on the field and we're more than confident we will be able to get the job done this weekend."

The Eagles have not beaten Wingate since their 2-1 victory in 2010. C-N's 2012 graduate Trenna Howell (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) put in both goals, one unassisted and one assisted by Garrison, a freshman at the time.

The Bulldog's lone goal was a penalty kick taken by Kelly Moldenhauer.

Carson-Newman was outshot by Wingate that game 16 to seven. C-N's current graduate assistant coach Sarah Tompkins, then sophomore, started in goal for the Eagles facing all 16 shots, five of which were on goal.

"I want the girls to have the same success," Tompkins said, "that I have had, and I don't want to leave the field Saturday without a win."

The match will kick off tomorrow at 5 p.m. Action can be followed live at http://www.sidearmstats.com/wingate/wsoc/.
