Lady Eagles seal first conference win over Lions

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman (3-10, 1-7 SAC) women's soccer team dominated Mars Hill (0-14-1, 0-9 SAC) for a 4-1 victory, the team's first conference win of the season.

"It's been a rough season for the girls," assistant women's soccer coach Sarah Tompkins said. "They deserved this win."

Mars Hill's Rachel Blong opened the scoring in the 28th minute with an unassisted goal off a mistake by C-N keeper Taylor Hammond (Suwanee, Ga.). The Lions entered half with a 1-0 lead.

Four minutes into second, freshman Camilla Olsson (Norway) scored her second goal of the season to tie up the match at ones. Sophomore Gabrielle Gianeselli (Knoxville, Tenn.) took a corner kick for the Eagles that landed in MHU's 6-yard box. Freshman center back Helen Seed (England) took a shot that deflected off Lions' keeper Maslyn Greene to the foot of Olsson.

Seed put in the winning goal seven minutes later off another corner kick by Gianeselli. In the 64th minute, sophomore Nora Logan (Charlotte, N.C.) put the Eagles up 3-1. Senior captain Sidnee Edwards (Knoxville, Tenn.) claimed the assist. Seed and Logan each have two goals on the year.

"The seniors were fantastic tonight," Coach Tompkins said. "The girls played their hearts out."

Gianeselli leads the Eagles in assists with three tying her for 13th in the SAC.

In the 89th minute, Logan was fouled in the box and C-N was awarded a penalty kick. Sophomore Chelsea Jordan (Knoxville, Tenn.) stepped up and planted the penalty in the right-side netting for her first goal of the season and the Eagles' fourth of the night.

C-N outshot Mars Hill 22 to nine and 16 to four in shots on goal. Hammond tallied three saves on the night.
