Carson-Newman ready for conference battle in hostile territory

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The 9th ranked Carson-Newman Eagles hit the road once again on Saturday, Oct. 6 when trot into Salisbury, N.C. to take on the Catawba College Catawba Indians.

The Eagles (9-0-1, 5-0-1) come off a 5-2 win at McCown Field on Wednesday taking down Lincoln Memorial which featured a wild second half bringing four yellow cards, one red card, and five goals between the teams.

"A lot of strange things happened in that game, but I thought we adjusted very, very well," mentioned Coach Simon Duffy. "Glad we got the result in the end and I'm sure teams will still be coming for us so we have to stay mentally tough."

The Catawba Indians (5-4, 3-1 SAC) were selected to finish seventh in the league in the preseason poll but currently hold the number five spot in the standings after wins over Newberry, Coker, and Mars Hill. The lone conference loss comes to Queens in a close 1-0 contest.

Forward Becky Frost is the lone player from Catawba College to grace the preseason all-conference second-team, as she has three goals and one assist so far this season. Senior defender Erin Feldman provides some firepower for the team leading the squad with four goals on the year.

Nick Brown enters his third season as the head coach for the Catawba College Catawba Indians after serving as an assistant for the previous five years.

"They're coach will have them well organized," added Duffy. "We'll hopefully be setup well to counter what they are good at and you take no team for granted at this point in the season."

C-N remains unbeaten through 10 games marking the just the second time in program history that the team has accomplished that feat. Simon Duffy is the first head coach to stay unbeaten through 10 games in their first season at the helm.

Lauren Wade currently sits in first-place in all of Division II Women's Soccer with eight assists so far on the season, helping the team hold the same spot with a total of 33 helpers on the year. Five Eagles hold all top five spots in the league in assists. Three of those five players also sit in the top three positions in points on the season.

"Going into it, we're one game away from not being unbeaten, and one game away from not being in the top-25," explained Duffy. "Not that we should fear all of that in any way, but it's a bit of motivation to push us forward."

The Eagles and Catawba Indians faced off twice in 2016, after the teams meet once again in the first round of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament. C-N outscored Catawba College 8-0 in their two meetings.

Game time at Frock Field is set for a 5:00 p.m. start.
