Eagles claim three spots on USC Scholar All-American teams, Wade named Player of the Year

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Helen Seed, Holly Talbut-Smith, and Lauren Wade headlined the 2017 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II Women's Scholar All-America Teams as announced on Friday afternoon.

Wade, who claimed CoSIDA Academic All-America honors just days ago, also collected the 2017 USC Women's Scholar Player of the Year for Division II. It's the first time the award has ever been received for a player at Carson-Newman.

Three players across the three-teams tied for the most of any school, including the likes of Queens University and Bemidji State.

Wade adds to her already impressive resume in which she claimed United Soccer Coaches First-Team All-American, D2CCA First-Team All-American, and the Academic All-American in a little less than two weeks. She was also tabbed Academic All-District back on Nov. 9.

"I am truly honored and proud to receive such a prestigious award," Wade explained. "I can't believe it and I'm totally speechless. I couldn't have done it without my teammates and coaching staff. They have all been so fantastic."

The Coleraine, Northern Ireland native maintains a 3.90 GPA cracking USC's first-team All-America, as she pursues her Masters of Business Administration at C-N.

Wade collected her 13th award since the end of the regular season, shattering the previous mark of seven in which she set in 2016. No player has received more awards in a single year with the next closest coming from assistant Julianne Herrity who earned five in 2015.

Of her 18 goals on the year, seven of those have come in the fashion of a game-winner which is tied for a single season program record. Her 49 points this season were tied for third in the nation.

The two-time All-American finishes her career with an abundance of C-N records. She ranks first all-time in assists per game (.60), shots per game (6.20) and shots on goal per game (3.35). This year's 81 shots on goal also stand as a single-season record.

She is third all-time in assists with 24 and goals with 38. She cracked the century mark with a point total of 100 in just two seasons.

Senior defender Helen Seed also posted first-team honors with a 3.38 GPA in Exercise Science.

It's the second award from USC this year in which she received All-Southeast Region honors and All-American honors.  Both awards were also received from the D2CCA.

"Very proud to get the award," Seed exclaimed. "It's always hard balancing school and athletics but I couldn't have done it without the support from the coaching staff and the teachers at Carson-Newman."

Seed (Preston, England) will finish with the fourth-most minutes played in the history of the women's soccer program at Carson-Newman tallying 6821. She started in 77 games over her four-career which is also good for third-best all-time. Her 23 games started in 2017 tie a program record for a single season, recording 2079 minutes in the process for fifth all-time.

Seed and Wade's presence on the first-team are the most of any other school.

Junior forward Holly Talbut-Smith claimed third-team honors with a 3.90 GPA in Exercise Science.

The native of Crawley, England ended the year third on the team in total points with 22, collecting six goals and 10 assists. She was also named to USC's All-Southeast Region team on Nov. 28 and was a member of CoSIDA's Academic All-District.

"It's such an honor to receive this award," Talbut-Smith added. "I'm thankful for all the help and support from everyone at C-N especially my professors, coaches and teammates. It's tough to balance school work with soccer so I wouldn't be able to do it without everybody's help especially instances when we are away for days at a time."

The Eagles have now collected 31 awards as a program since the end of the regular season, the most in the history of women's soccer topping previous records of 19.
