Steady Eagles sweep Cobras for first SAC win of 2022

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – It was time for 2022 SAC play to get underway for Carson-Newman women's tennis as the Eagles took to their home courts at the Buddy Catlett Tennis Complex for the first time this spring Friday. C-N (6-2, 1-0 SAC) would play host to the Coker Cobras (4-8, 0-3 SAC) as it would be a final score of 7-0 falling in favor of the home team.

Friday marked the second straight season for C-N and Coker to square off on March 4 as last year's meeting was a dominant 7-0 clean sweep by the Eagles in Hartsville. Summer Reeves led the Eagles with her sixth consecutive singles victory from the number four slot, while the Eagles barely trailed in any match against the Cobras.

The 2022 version and SAC opener for C-N saw doubles play almost assuredly go the way of C-N as only one of the three matches saw more than seven games played between the two sides.

The first match to go final between C-N and Coker was from number three doubles as Violetta Khisamova (Yaroslavl, Russia) and Julia Speiser handled business and took a clean 6-0 win to give C-N the early edge.

Then, in number one doubles, graduate student Hannah Price (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Natasha Forrest (Jersey, United Kingdom) clinched the doubles point for C-N as they picked up a 6-1 victory.

However, just to make sure there was no doubt, Ana Carla Resende (Minas Gerais, Brazil) would once again be joined in number two doubles by sophomore Summer Reeves (Maidstone, Kent, England). The duo played the closest result on Friday as it was C-N claiming all three doubles matches after Resende/Reeves won 6-4.

"Great way to start the conference season especially with how busy this upcoming week will be for our ladies," head coach Jim Frederick said.

As singles play started, the Eagles had no trouble continuing their momentum and winning every single matchup as all six only lasted the two-set minimum for a final decision.

The singles portion saw Ana Carla Resende rebound after suffering a loss in her last action, by winning 6-4, 6-4 from her usual number one singles slot. Then, her doubles partner in Summer Reeves, kept the train rolling as she would take a 6-2, 6-2 win in number two singles.

In number three singles, it was sophomore Violetta Khisamova continuing her successful start to SAC play in 2022 as she picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win.

From number four singles, C-N saw Hannah Price continue her winning ways with a 6-1 victory to officially clinch the result on Friday for the Eagles. Therefore, her doubles partner Natasha Forrest played a one-set eight game set as she would take the final by a score of 8-3.

Finally, in number six single, Anita Chornei got off to a great start in conference play as she closed out the clean sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 flawless performance at number six singles.

Carson-Newman women's tennis will be right back at home tomorrow, March 5, as they serve up their second SAC match of the spring against the visiting Limestone Saints for a 1:30 p.m. first serve.
