Eagles soar within ITA top 20

ITA rankings (April 14)

TEMPE, Ariz. – For the second consecutive week, it is Carson-Newman women's tennis staking claim to a spot in the latest ITA top 30. The Eagles move up ten spot for the April 14 poll, coming in at their highest ranking of 2022, no. 17.

C-N (15-4, 9-2 SAC) picked up a pair of SAC victories last week, including a massive upset of the Queens (N.C.) Royals to hand them their first loss of the season. First, it was the Orange and Blue overcoming their east Tennessee rival, Tusculum, 5-2 last Wednesday. From there, C-N dropped a pivotal matchup with the red-hot Wolves of Newberry 4-3. Finally, the Eagles rallied immensely to claim their first win in Charlotte over the Royals as they won 4-3 and put a blemish in the Royals' perfect record.

Senior Ana Carla Resende (Minas Gerais, Brazil) continues to be one of the top-50 singles players this season, as she comes in as the 43rd- ranked women's singles player for the latest rankings. In her 2022 campaign, Resende sits at 14-4 this spring, including 8-2 in conference play. In her last 10 matches, the Brazil native has seen a near perfect record as she has gone 8-2 as well.

Newberry's Zulay Castaneda comes in as the highest ranked SAC women's singles player, sitting at number 15. The other SAC women's singles players ranked this week are Wingate's Camilla Ciaccia (#23), Queen's Jill Morse (#30), Resende, Anderson's Catherine Blouin (#56), Newberry's Nastassia Chamoun (#65), Anderson's Anna Greer (#68), and Limestone's Anamaria Kiszner (#70).

In the latest team rankings, it is the Queens (N.C.) Royals leading the way for all SAC women's programs as they sit at no. 11, only one spot ahead of Wingate at no. 12. Following the Royals and Bulldogs is Newberry coming at number 16, right ahead of the Eagles. The other SAC programs ranked in the April 14 poll are Lenoir-Rhyne (#35), Tusculum (#38), Anderson (#43), and Lincoln Memorial (#51).

The Eagles will close out their 2022 regular season with a matchup against the Catawba Indians on Saturday with first serve at 2:00 p.m. Saturday will also mark the annual Senior Day for the Eagles as they will hold festivities following match conclusion with the Indians.
