NASHVILLE, Tenn. – For the second time in as many days, Carson-Newman defensive back Jason Williams (Fayetteville, Ga.) has been recognized for his accomplishments on the field.

Williams has been lauded as the Tennessee Sports Writers' Association's state defensive player of the week becoming the third Eagle to earn the accolade this season.

Williams made five tackles and had a crucial pick six in the Eagles' 48-45 shootout win over North Greenville.  The defensive player of the week accolade is the first for Williams and the first for an Eagle since Jaycob Coleman earned defensive player of the week honors in a 27-24 win over Colorado Mines in the second week of the 2013 season. 

The junior's interception return for a touchdown gives him two defensive scores for the season.  He is the first Eagle with two defensive touchdowns in the same season since 2009 when Isaac Kinley and Elliet Jackson each recovered and returned two fumbles for touchdowns as the Eagles made a run to the national semifinals.

Two plays into the second half, the Fayetteville, Ga.-native leapt in front of a flag pattern to the near sideline.  Using two hand, Williams plucked the pigskin out of the sky and raced down the numbers along the right side line to the house. 

The interception wasn't without its drama, though.  North Greenville quarterback Nelson Hughes had an angle on Williams and managed to make contact at the 10; however, Williams spun through the would-be tackle and housed the pick for six.

Williams also had two pass break ups in the affair.
