Wise selected for United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace International Sport and Social Impact Summit

BRADENTON, Fla. – Carson-Newman football placekicker Carson Wise has been selected to attend the United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace's (UNOSP) International Sport and Social Impact Summit from June 6-18 in Bradenton, Fla.

Wise is one of 11 current and former student-athletes who were selected to attend the summit, the NCAA leadership development department announced.

"Last summer I went to do a study abroad leadership class in the Dominican Republic," Wise said. "That got me really interested in how sports can be used as a tool to better communities around the world.  I'd never really experienced that.  Sport is something I have a passion for and it's been coupled with a newfound interest in helping these communities."

A committee comprised of members from the Association – a group that includes current administrators and past seminar participants across all NCAA divisions – selected the participants. All three NCAA divisions will be represented.

"Once I found out about Carson-Newman's social entrepreneurship major and its focus on nonprofits, it really made sense to do that and look toward doing that for a career after I graduate," Wise said. "The NCAA had this program on how sport can be used for international development, I thought it'd be a great opportunity to learn and pursue what I hope will be a great opportunity to grow after college."

The United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace International Sport and Social Impact Summit is an outreach program targeted at the global millennial generation. At the two-week event, participants learn to use the universal language of sports to engage and lead their peers in addressing social and economic issues in their communities.

Wise is the only football player headed to the summit and one of two athletes from the South Atlantic Conference.  Coker volleyball player Madison Bingle will join Wise.
