Eagles Take Sixth in Loaded Field at Laker Invite

HAMPTON, Ga. - The Carson-Newman Eagles fired a 3-under 285 on day two to finish sixth at the Laker Invitational played Tuesday at Crystal Lake Golf and Country Club in Hampton, Ga. The Eagles carded a two-day 576 (E) to finish 14 strokes back of champion Newberry in a field loaded with nationally-ranked teams.

Senior Brad Robinson (Johnson City, Tenn.) finished fifth, firing a two-day 139 (-3). He closed the tournament six strokes back of Barry's Chris Carlin, who finished at 9-under (133).

Sophomore Liam Ashby (Dublin, Ireland) finished in a tie for 27th at 145. He and freshman Gavin Hay (Glasgow, Scotland) each carded a 71 on the tournament's second day. Hay finished at 146 (+2) and 33rd for the tournament, while Ashby closed at 145 (+1).

Junior Chase Conn (Mason, Ohio) also finished in 33rd. He posted back-to-back 73s.

Team champions Newberry shot a 10-under par 278 for Tuesday's final round and finished the tournament with a 14-under 562 to win. Newberry finished four strokes ahead of top-ranked Georgia College and five strokes in front of second-ranked Barry. The tournament was reduced from 54 holes to 36 holes due to the heavy rains and flooding that blanked the metro Atlanta area on Monday evening.

Newberry was propelled by two fine tournaments from Daniel Stanley and Ben Lown. Stanley followed up Monday's 6-under 66 with a 3-under 69 to finish second overall at 9-under 135, while Lown wound up tied for third with 7-under 137.

Seventh-ranked Florida Southern finished fourth overall with a 2-under 574, followed closely by fourth-ranked Lynn at 1-under 575. Rounding out the top 10 in the loaded 16-team field was C-N (576), Queens (577), 17th-ranked Lander and UNC Pembroke (583), seventh-ranked Columbus State, 16th-ranked Clayton State and Georgia Southwestern (585).

Individually, Carlin followed up a 67 on Monday with a 6-under 66 on Tuesday and won individual medallist honors with an 11-under 133. He finished two strokes ahead of Stanley and four strokes ahead of both Lown and Lynn's Patricio Salem. Georgia College's Niclas Johansson, Carson-Newman's Brad Robinson and Queens' Ben Lasso each finished tied for fifth at 5-under 139, while Queens' Braeden Cryderman and Montevallo's Jon Henderson both finished tied for eighth at 4-under 140.
