Eagles Fall to LMU 3-1

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Eagles (2-5) women's soccer team fell to the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters (4-1) by a 3-1 score at McCown Field on Wednesday night.

Freshman midfielder Mikayla Gregg (Newport, Tenn.) scored Carson-Newman's lone goal in the match on a penalty kick in the 31st minute mark of the first period. The goal is Gregg's third of the season.

"Great team effort today from the ladies," said Carson-Newman head coach Richard Moodie. "They're disappointed but we (coaching staff) see the positives from them."

After Gregg's goal gave Carson-Newman a 1-0 lead in the match, the Railsplitters would score nearly seven minutes later in the 38th minute mark as Josefin Hedstrom scored from 30 yards out to tie the match.

The score was tied 1-1 at halftime, despite LMU outshooting C-N 9-5 in the first period.

LMU would take the lead in the 53rd minute mark. Racheal Vienneau scored on a header of off a corner kick just past the Carson-Newman goalkeeper freshman Kendra Ivins (Chattanooga, Tenn.), to give the Railsplitters a 2-1 advantage.

The Railsplitters would see their final goal come in the 80th minute mark as Olivia Thompson scored from the left side of the box to put the score at 3-1, which would be the final.

Ivins played the first 80:26 between the posts for Carson-Newman before senior Tiarna McKenna (Lisburn, Northern Ireland) finished the match at keeper. Ivins collected six saves despite allowing six goals during the match. McKenna made two saves during her 9:34 to close out the match.

"She had a great game," said Moodie on Ivins' performance. "She keeps playing with confidence and she stepped up to the plate. I'm very proud of her."

The Eagles were outshot in the match 17-12, as LMU goalkeeper Kayla Hanson collected the win, playing the entire match for the Railsplitters. She allowed only Gregg's goal and also made three saves during the match.

Carson-Newman will next play on Saturday afternoon against the Wingate Bulldogs at the WU Soccer Complex in Wingate, N.C. at 4:30 p.m.
