Eagles finish 2012 season with 1-0 win over Mars Hill

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Eagles (3-11-2, 1-7-1 South Atlantic Conference) women's soccer team finished the 2012 season on a positive note with a 1-0 victory over the Mars Hill Lions (6-12, 2-7 South Atlantic Conference) on Saturday evening at McCown Field.

Sophomore midfielder Sidnee Edwards scored the lone goal in the victory, as the Eagles earned their first win since Sept. 8.

"I was obviously very proud of the girls," said Carson-Newman head coach Richard Moodie. "It was a great game, we deserved to win. We outshot them and outplayed them. We told the girls it's now how you start, it's how you finish, and we're going to start preparing for next year starting Monday."

Edwards' game-winning goal came in the 27th minute mark off of a Bianca Hall (Newcastle, England) assist to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead, which would be the final score.

Carson-Newman outshot Mars Hill 18-2 in the match, and in the second period the Lions didn't attempt a shot while Carson-Newman had six.

Goalkeeper Tiarna McKenna (Lisburn, Northern Ireland) picked up the shutout win for the Eagles, not allowing a goal while Mars Hill did not have a shot on goal.

Prior to the game, the Eagles said goodbye to a senior class that included midfielders Sylvia Palermo (Wintergarden, Fla.), and Brooke Ehman (Chelsea, Mich.).

"Sylvia's just a warrior," said Moodie. "The girl just keeps fighting and fighting and tonight had an absolute blinder of a game. She's really fought through injuries and this year she gave us everything she got.

"Brooke has just been riddled by injuries this season. She got injured early on against Lees-McRae and missed the medical redshirt by a couple of games. She's definitely one of the top players that this program has ever seen. She played the last five minutes of the game and she came on and we were able to let her enjoy her senior night."
