Eagles fight to scoreless draw at Trevecca Nazarene

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Eagles (2-10-2, 0-6-1 South Atlantic Conference) women's soccer team fought to a double-overtime scoreless draw against the Trevecca Nazarene Trojans (7-2-3) at the TNU Soccer Complex on Wednesday night.

Carson-Newman goalkeepers senior Tiarna McKenna (Lisburn, Northern Ireland) and freshman Kendra Ivins (Chattanooga, Tenn.) worked the entire match between the posts, not allowing a goal in 110 minutes while combining to collect three saves.

"I'm really proud of the girls and the way they fought," said Carson-Newman head coach Richard Moodie. "It's an improvement, the conditions were tough, it was really windy and that made it tough for both teams to play. The girls have worked hard and they haven't quit."

The draw continues Carson-Newman's winless drought, as the Eagles have not won a match since Sept. 8, yet have earned a draw in two of their last three matches.

The Eagles outshot the Trojans 16-3 in the match, and Carson-Newman took 11 shots on goal.

Carson-Newman's junior forward Danna Stringle (Woodstock, Ontario, Canada) paced the Eagles' shooting effort with five shots, all of which were on goal. Freshman midfielder Mikayla Gregg (Newport, Tenn.), and junior midfielder Maleya Garrison (Hendersonville, Tenn.), both had a pair of shots on goal in the match.

The first period was a defensive struggle, with Carson-Newman outshooting Trevecca Nazarene 4-2. In the second period, both teams had opportunities, with Carson-Newman outshooting Trevecca Nazarene 9-8.

In the first overtime period, the Eagles withstood three shots by Trevecca, while making one shot. In the second overtime period, Garrison provided both of Carson-Newman's shots, yet the match ended in a scoreless draw.

Trevecca Nazarene goalkeeper Bekah Hendrick worked the entirety of the match in between the posts for the Trojans, not allowing a goal while collecting 11 saves. This is the final road match of the season for the Eagles, and Moodie is encouraged the season will end at home at McCown Field.

"Tonight was positive as we try to move forward," Moodie said. "Glad we picked up some momentum with this result as we go home."

Carson-Newman will next play on Saturday Oct. 20 at home against Anderson (S.C.). The match at McCown Field begins at 4:30 p.m., and a live audio webcast will be available at www.cneagles.com.
