Stringle scores yet Eagles fall to Indians 2-1

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Eagles (2-9, 0-5 South Atlantic Conference) women's soccer team fell 2-1 to the Catawba Indians (8-5, 3-2 South Atlantic Conference) at McCown Field on Saturday evening.

Junior forward Danna Stringle (Woodstock, Ontario, Canada) scored a goal in her third straight match for the Eagles, and she now leads Carson-Newman with four goals in the 2012 campaign.

The Indians took the game's first lead near the end of the first period. In the 41st minute mark, Karen Presnell scored for Catawba to give the Indians a 1-0 lead, which would be the score at the half. Catawba had the advantage in shots in the first period with 11 compared to Carson-Newman's eight.

Catawba carried the 1-0 lead until the waning moments of the second period. In the 86th minute mark, Stringle scored on a penalty kick to tie the match at one. In addition to her three matches in a row with a goal, Stringle has scored on penalty kicks in the past two matches for the Eagles.

The match remained tied until the final minute of the second period. In the 89th minute mark, Catawba's Sophie Walker kicked in the game-winning goal with only 43 seconds remaining in the match. The Indians played keep-away for the remaining seconds to hold on to the 2-1 victory.

The Eagles were outshot by the Indians 19-11 in the match, with Catawba getting eight shots compared to Carson-Newman's three in the second period.

Freshman goalkeeper Kendra Ivins (Chattanooga, Tenn.), took the loss working all 90 minutes between the posts. She allowed two goals while collecting five saves in the match. Earning the win for Catawba was goalkeeper Angelica Pawlowski, who allowed one goal with five saves.

The Indians had six corner kicks in the match while the Eagles had three, and both teams had a total of five saves in the match.

The loss is Carson-Newman's seventh straight, and the Eagles haven't won since Sept. 8.

Carson-Newman will next play on Wednesday Oct. 10 at Brevard, with the match beginning at 2 p.m.
