Stringle Scores in 1-1 Draw at Brevard

BREVARD, N.C. – The Carson-Newman Eagles (2-9-1, 0-5-1 South Atlantic Conference) women's soccer team fought to a double-overtime 1-1 draw against the Brevard Tornados (1-10-2, 0-5-1 South Atlantic Conference) on Wednesday afternoon.

Junior forward Danna Stringle (Woodstock, Ontario, Canada) scored a goal in her fourth straight match for the Eagles, and she now leads Carson-Newman with five goals in the 2012 campaign.

Stringle scored off of a Maleya Garrison (Hendersonville, Tenn.), assist from the right side of the box to give Carson-Newman a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute mark of the match.

The Eagles maintained their one-goal lead until the 49th minute mark. Just minutes into the second period, Brevard's Taylor Hembree scored on an assist by Jamie Bundy to even the match at one.

Neither team scored a goal for the rest of the second overtime, forcing overtime at Brevard. Carson-Newman outshot Brevard 21-6 in the first two periods.

In the overtime periods, Carson-Newman would make five shots while the Tornados did not make a shot in either period. When the second overtime period ended without a goal, the match was declared a draw.

Carson-Newman edged Brevard in the total shots category 26-6. Stringle and Garrison both accounted for three shots during the match, while junior midfielder Sylvia Palermo (Wintergarden, Fla.) also made two shots in the match.

Senior goalkeeper Tiarna McKenna (Lisburn, Northern Ireland) worked the entire match in between the posts for Carson-Newman.

She only allowed the one goal while collecting three saves during the match. Brevard goalkeeper Brittany Webster allowed one goal while making eight saves.

Both teams had three corner kicks during the course of the match.

The draw is Carson-Newman's first this season, and the Eagles haven't won a match since Sept. 8.

Carson-Newman will next play on Saturday Oct. 13 against Lenoir-Rhyne in Hickory, N.C. The match begins at 5 p.m., and live stats will be available.
