Trojans use early second half goal to get past C-N

ANDERSON, S.C. – Carson-Newman (5-6-3, 2-5-3 SAC) surrendered an early second half goal that proved to be the difference in a 2-1 road loss to Anderson (7-6-2, 4-5-1 SAC) on Saturday afternoon.

"Another disappointing result," Carson-Newman head coach Simon Duffy said. "Especially with knowing what was at stake for us today. Just couldn't find a way to put the ball in the back of the net with all the possession that we had in the game."

Anderson took the game's first three shots. The first shot on goal came in the 9th minute, that forced Berna Kabakci (Zeddam, Netherlands) to make her first save of the game.

C-N's first two shots of the game came four minutes apart, as Selina Jud (Wilderswil, Switzerland) and Karli Pettitt (Kingston, Tenn.) both missed the target.

The Eagles really began to threaten goal in the 20th minute. Alba Delgado's first shot toward the center of goal forced AU goalkeeper Macy McDufford to make her first save of the day. Eleven minutes later, Frick tried her chance with a shot toward the bottom left corner of goal that forced a diving stop.

Shortly after Frick's chance, AU would strike first. Ansley Douty found Whitley Anderson who scored in the 32nd minute to make it 1-0 Anderson.

Aggressive play forward led to a penalty kick opportunity. A foul that was in the penalty box allowed C-N to tie the match in the 42nd minute. Frick stepped up and buried her seventh career penalty kick goal, staying a perfect seven for seven in her career to level the score at intermission.

54 seconds into the second half, Anderson would strike back on a Catherine Nardella goal to go back in front 2-1. It's the second time this season that C-N has allowed a goal less than one minute into the second half.

The Eagles would have their chances to find an equalizer. In the 50th minute, Jud had her shot toward the bottom left corner saved. Krista Nielsen took C-N's next shot on target, but McDufford made another save.

Savannah Fields (Johnson City, Tenn.) had Carson-Newman's final chance on target, but her shot toward the center of goal was saved in the 75th minute. C-N only had one more shot the rest of the game, and it missed the target.

Carson-Newman outshot 16-9 and had a 7-4 advantage on goal. The Eagles also had a five to two advantage in corner kicks taken.

Berna Kabakci made two saves, facing four shots on goal. McDufford made six saves in the win.

Carson-Newman concludes the regular season with a road matchup against Tusculum on Wednesday evening at 5:00 p.m.
