Harrogate, Tenn. – No. 21 Carson-Newman scooted past Lincoln Memorial for their fourth-straight win of the season en route to a 5-2 victory at the LMU Soccer Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
The win marks C-N's (4-2, 2-0 SAC) fifth straight win against the Railsplitters (3-2, 0-1 SAC) and six out of the last seven overall. The Eagles hold the advantage in the all-time series at 17-7-1 with nine of those wins coming on the road.
C-N has now moved to 29-3-2 against South Atlantic Conference opponents during the last three regular-season matches outscoring such teams 107-25.
"We didn't do well in the first half, but fair play to the girls in the second," Duffy added. "They came out ready to go. They were pressing high and we found some gaps. It's a great win today despite some things we need to work on. At half we just told them it wasn't good enough. Hold yourself accountable and move the ball quickly. The bench was fantastic today when we needed them due to the heat and some sick players."
The Eagles jumped out to an early advantage just 90 seconds into the game when Emilee Futrell (Wilson, N.C.) fed senior forward Magda Mosengo (London, England) up the left side. Her shot from the box with the left foot went past the diving LMU keeper making it the fourth-straight game in which C-N opened up with a goal within the first 12 minutes of the game.
The Railsplitters responded promptly with a goal of their own in the 4th minute as Jessica Cravero ripped a shot by Jackie Burns (Cookstown, Northern Ireland) for her fourth of the season.
It didn't stay tied for long as the aforementioned Futrell made her move in the early portions of the 5th minute. The sophomore forward made a nice cutback move on the ball near the left corner of the 18-yard box, bending a right-footed shot past O'Connell for her team-leading fifth tally of the year.
Heading into the 31st minute, two defensive breakdowns led to back-to-back chances from the LMU side. Itzel Ballesteros broke through for her third goal of the season on well-placed balls from Maria Hernandez and Isa Jara.
With just 15 seconds left in the first half, sophomore midfielder Kristina Markfort (Munster, Germany) threw a shot on goal from the left side of the 18-yard box as it glanced past O'Connell for the first goal of her career to give the Eagles a 3-2 advantage heading into the break.
It was a shot frenzy half that saw nine from C-N and seven from LMU.
Elena Propst (Maiden, N.C.) and Mosengo connected for the third time this season in the 62nd minute when the pass from the freshman forward from was placed perfectly at the feet of her teammate in the 18-yard box. Mosengo took one touch to her right and drilled home her second of the day, tying for the team lead in goals with five.
"We just played quickly," Mosengo mentioned. "We just played our game out there and we knew we had to pick it up at the half. Good teams have to adapt in any situation dealing with the field and the heat. Obviously that showed by the final score, and we knew there were goals to go get."
Catarina Realista (Lisbon, Portugal) put the game on ice in the 80th minute when she took advantage of a downed LMU goalkeeper, floating in a shot from over 30 yards out for her first points of the new season.
Burns collected three saves on the afternoon with O'Connell called into action six times. C-N won the shooting battle 22-14.
