Video: Magda Mosengo Interview
ROCK HILL, S.C. – The South Atlantic Conference announced its women's soccer players of the week on Tuesday morning as Carson-Newman forward Magda Mosengo earned the honor for the second time this season.
The senior collected both of C-N's goals on Saturday, Oct. 13 in a 2-0 victory over Queens in Charlotte, N.C. Mosengo's goals came under a five-minute span to begin the second half taking just 66 seconds for the Eagles to capitalize into the frame. Emilee Futrell's flick pass to the right side of the post and over a Royals defender set up Mosengo for her 12th goal of the year and the eventual game-winner. It's her fourth game-winning goal of 2018, a program record in which she tied a year ago with seven.
"It's difficult to win road games in this league especially since we're Carson-Newman and what we've accomplished," Mosengo said. "Playing at home is one thing but going to somebody else's fortress and trying to conquer that is something else no matter where we go. We're such a resilient and strong team and we're going to put up a good fight every game."
In the 52nd minute, C-N held a free kick opportunity just outside the right corner of the 18-yard box. Alex Brandan's bender with the left boot found the head of Mosengo putting the Eagles up by a pair. The assist was Brandan's fourth in three games.
"We have good chemistry on and off the field and honestly most of the goals we get don't have much communication behind it," Mosengo said. "It's all natural and fluid for us and those two are just phenomenal and to play with."
With the two tallies, Mosengo (London, England) is tied for eighth in the nation in the category with a total of 13 on the season, a mark which is good enough for tops in the SAC.
The four-point afternoon moved the preseason All-League forward to fifth in school history for total points with 83. She remains 15 points behind fourth-place holder Lauren Wade (2017-18).
Her career goal total of 33 is also near the top in the program's history as she checks in at No. 7. Current Assistant Coach Julianne Herrity (2015-16) is in 6th with 34, while the aforementioned Wade holds fifth with 37.
"We've said it before and I'll say it again, she's just a gamer," Coach Simon Duffy said. "She can be one of the most dominant players not just in the league but across the Division II level. Magda has the support of her teammates and even while I'm sure she appreciates the honor. For her, it is about getting the result at the end of the day in order to set ourselves up for a title."
