JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – It's a series in which the 20th-ranked Carson-Newman women's soccer program has lost only twice in its 28 meetings. The Eagles will look to extend the eleven-game winning streak on Wednesday, Oct. 17 when Mars Hill visits McCown Field. Game time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
The Lions have not defeated the Eagles since the 2007 season in which they took a 3-2 decision in Mars Hill, N.C. Both of their wins against C-N have come on their home turf with the only other victory dating back to the 1997 season.
In the last ten encounters, the Eagles have outscored the Lions 36-9 while holding the overall series record 25-2-1. C-N will look to build on its record against conference opponents over the last three regular-season meetings as they hold a 33-4-2 record while outscoring opponents 122-28.
Mars Hill's last winning season came in 2010 when they ended the year 9-7-2 (3-4-2 SAC): however, the last winning season in conference dates back to the 2006 season when they finished at 4-3.
Since the 2011 year, Mars Hill is 10-49 against SAC opponents, and just 5-33 on the road in such contests. MHU's lone SAC win this season came at Coker on Oct. 6 in a 2-1 win. The Lions come off a 1-0 OT loss to Catawba at home on Oct. 10. MHU went with a player down after Josie Matlick's red card in the 38th minute and were able to hold off the Indians until Amber Hand's goal in the 100th minute.
The Lions are currently 10th or worse in the SAC in all statistical categories excluding yellow/red cards, penalty kicks, attendance average, and games played. Mars Hill was picked to finish 10th in the league receiving 25 points ahead of Coker's 21.
Freshman Sanne Martinsen has six of Mars Hills seven goals in 2018. Julia Johnson is the other lone goal scorer. Four of Martinsen's six goals have come in conference matches. No Lions were selected to either of the preseason All-SAC teams
Jamey Newsome enters his second season at the helm for the Lions, as he also graduated from the University in 1997.
Prior to the hire, Newsome served as assistant director of Darlington School Soccer Academy where he directed the girl's program and played a large role in the development of young players. Prior to his time at Darlington, Newsome served as the head women's soccer coach at Auburn University Montgomery and director of coaching at FC Torjager. During his time at AUM he owned a record of 42-28-6.
C-N will look to collect its third-straight clean sheet after holding Anderson and Queens scoreless. The Eagles have allowed 12 goals through 11 games this season, a number which they had during all 23 games of 2017.
Duffy's group dropped back one spot in the national rankings after its lone game last week. The Eagles remained at No. 3 in the Southeast Region rankings in which No. 1 ranked Columbus State sits at the top and No. 15 ranked Limestone at No. 2. C-N matches up with the Saints on Oct. 24.
