TSWA names Mosengo as Player of the Week

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Helping Carson-Newman collect two straight wins on the week, Magda Mosengo was voted Player of the Week by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association this morning.

The senior forward collected a total of five goals and one assist in the team's victories over conference foes Lincoln Memorial and Coker.

"She's just an exciting player to watch," Coach Simon Duffy said. "Magda is a competitor and she knows what is expected of her game in and game out. When she really gets it going, she can be one of the best players in the nation. Happy for her to grab the award as she was a big part of our week."

On Sept. 19's trip to Harrogate, Tenn., Mosengo (London, England) tallied two goals in the 5-2 win which included one to open up the scoring just 1:11 into the game. She later sent a rocket past the Railsplitter goalkeeper in the 62nd minute to give the Eagles a 4-2 advantage.

C-N returned to McCown Field heading into Saturday for the first time since Sept. 5th, awaiting the Coker Cobras. The Eagles scored just one time in the first 45 minutes, but Mosengo would be a huge part of the six-goal second half in which she would receive credit for the first four scored.

The first-team preseason all-SAC honoree opened the half with back-to-back goals in the 54th minute to extend the team's lead to three. Less than a minute later, Mosengo found Holly Talbut-Smith (Crawley, England) to push the lead to 4-0. C-N had scored three goals in just 1:19.

Mosengo continued the onslaught in the 62nd on a beautiful give-and-go with senior midfielder Catarina Realista (Lisbon, Portugal) notching her second career hat trick. Her last three-goal game came in the 2017 Southeast Region Title match in a 6-0 win over Columbus State.

With the 11-point week, Mosengo sits tied for seventh in the nation in goals with eight. Her point total of 19 also puts her near the top in a three-way tie for sixth.

The three-goal afternoon against Coker moved the London, England native into 10th all time in program history with a total of 28 goals. She remains three goals away from seventh in career goals.

"It's a great feeling to be recognized for your efforts," Mosengo said. "I couldn't do what I did this week if it wasn't for the efforts of my teammates. I'm thankful for the recognition and will continue to do my thing on the field."

Mosengo also was lauded by the South Atlantic Conference as the Offensive Player of the Week.
