JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – No. 12 ranked Carson-Newman will return to McCown Field following its first loss in 25 games when the Anderson Trojans come to town on Saturday, Oct. 6. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
Simon Duffy's Eagles (6-3, 4-1) had a home winning streak that dated back to Sept. 11, 2015, which was snapped in a 2-1 final to Tusculum on Wednesday. C-N played 80 minutes with a player down in the match and was still able to outshoot the Pioneers 18-4.
"It's a way for us now to start a new home record now," Duffy said. "We played well, had the desire, termination, the response. I hope we can have a response Saturday."
The loss also broke C-N's streak of six consecutive wins as they suffered its first South Atlantic Conference loss since Oct. 15, 2016, to Wingate.
Despite the loss to Tusculum, C-N is 31-4-2 against league opponents over the last three regular-season meetings outscoring opponents 118-28. Including tournament matches, the record bulges to 40-4-2 with a difference in scoring of 138-30.
The Eagles will be without preseason All-SAC goalkeeper Jackie Burns (Cookstown, Northern Ireland) after the junior received a red card in Wednesday's tussle with the Pioneers.
C-N has allowed 12 goals through its first nine games this season, a number in which the team had allowed in all of 2017 through its 23-game schedule.
Magda Mosengo (London, England) continues to cause problems for opponents in 2018. After failing to record a point in C-N's first two games, she has recorded at least one point in every match since. The senior forward is tied for 8th in the nation in goals (10), tied for 9th in total points (24), and leads SAC in goals (10). Following her most recent goal against Tusculum, Mosengo is now tied for 7th in program history with 30 goals in her career.
"I always tell the forwards it is not about how many goals you score a game, it is how many games you score," Duffy said. "She's climbing up those stairs and it's a long way to the top for what she can accomplish."
The Trojans remain undefeated in conference play rattling off four-straight wins in victories over Newberry, Mars Hill, Lincoln Memorial, and Queens. They are the only team remaining in the league who is undefeated in such games. The most recent matches against LMU and Queens resulted in 2-1 OT victories.
Anderson has lost four straight matches against Carson-Newman with their last win dating back to the 2015 campaign.
The Trojans were picked to finish 7th in the South Atlantic Conference Preseason Polls receiving a total of 53 points after a 2017 record of 6-9-2 overall, 5-5 in SAC play. The lone preseason first-team selection was senior Megan Foster with sophomore Melanie Maddox cracking second team honors.
Foster made 14 starts last season while logging over 800 minutes for the Trojans. Maddox made 16 starts while posting one goal and one assist.
Sarah Jacobs' team returns 10 of its seniors. Jacobs arrived prior to the 2017 season after several stops in the professional soccer ranks, most recently with FC Dallas of the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL). Jacobs had served as an interim head coach for the Trojans since February when Julie Davis Carlson announced that she was stepping down.
"In simple, they are getting results," Duffy said. "I'm hoping we can put a stop to it with the way they started 0-4 out of conference then won four-straight in the conference."
Of the 13 goals the team has conceded this season, the Trojans have conceded just two in league games. Three players are tied for the team lead with two goals apiece: Kirsten Armetta, Maggie Black, and Bethany Morgan.
