Eagles defeated by Anderson in conference opener

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman's no. 2 doubles team of Jennifer Ott (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Haleigh Chastain (Knoxville, Tenn.) seized one of a couple of a victories in Carson-Newman's (2-4) 7-2 loss to Anderson (6-2) Monday at the Carson-Newman Tennis Complex.

Ott and Chastain nipped Lindsay Gregory and Alexandra Ebner in a 9-8 decision with a 6-0 tiebreaker.

Ott also picked up a win at no. 4 singles over Ebner 1-6, 7-5, 10-6.  Ott has now won back-to-back singles matches.

Brooke Sanderson (Evans, Ga.) and Megan Wilson (Maryville, Tenn.) competed closely with Hannah Ecleberry and Camie Beaulieu-Brune in the no. 3 doubles spot.

While Carson-Newman dropped the match 8-1, the Eagles were neck-and-neck with the Trojans in several matches. Brooke Sanderson (Evans, Ga.) and Megan Wilson (Maryville, Tenn.) competed closely with Hannah Ecleberry and Camie Beaulieu-Brune in the no. 3 doubles spot before falling 8-5.

In singles competition, no. 1 Stefy Stand (Ecuador) took Karen Ching to three sets before dropping a 4-6, 6-0, 10-7 decision. Sanderson also partook in a close match against Gregory in the no. 5 spot – Gregory came away with a victory thanks to a win in the second set tiebreaker 6-4, 7-6 (6-0). Patricia Guerreiro (Portugal) was narrowly defeated at no. 2 singles by Avery Owens finishing 6-4, 6-4.

The Eagles continue conference competition this Friday at 2:00 p.m. at Catawba.
