Carson-Newman falls to Catawba on the road

SALISBURY, N.C. – The Eagle's (2-5) took Catawba (11-4) into three third-set tiebreakers but ended up falling in heartbreaking fashion 6-3 on Friday.

Brooke Sanderson (Evans, Ga.) sealed the lone win for Carson-Newman in singles competition defeating Olivia Meyers 6-4, 6-7, 10-7 after a tiebreaker in the no. 5 spot to win her first match as a five (she previously was 0-2).

Patricia Guerreiro (Portugal) fought hard against Sloan Kessler at no. 2 singles going into another tiebreaker. Guerreiro fell in the longest tiebreaker of the season for either C-N's men's or women's team in a 6-3, 2-6, 22-20 decision. At no. 3 singles, Haleigh Chastain (Knoxville, Tenn.) had a close match against Lauren Sledd but fell after another tiebreaker 6-7, 6-3, 10-5.

Chastain and Jennifer Ott (Knoxville, Tenn.) paired up at no. 2 doubles to defeat Sledd and Ally Prior 8-5. The duo is now 4-1 on the year as a pair and has won three straight. – Carson-Newman pulled out another win at no. 3 doubles with the team of Sanderson and Megan Wilson (Maryville, Tenn.) – the duo beat Andrea Bell and Rachael Rudisill 8-4 to even their season record at 2-2. Stefy Stand (Ecuador) and Guerreiro battled closely before dropping the match at no. 1 doubles 8-3 to Kessler and Liz Renteria.

The Eagles continue conference play on the road facing Wingate on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
