SAC lauds Wheeler with Player of the Week nod

ROCK HILL, S.C. - After an electric start to the season, Julia Wheeler was named the South Atlantic Conference's Offensive Player of the Week on Monday guiding Carson-Newman to a 3-1 start to the 2022 season.

The laurel is the third time in the Murfreesboro, Tenn. native's career she has earned a weekly honor bringing her overall career award tally to six after cleaning up postseason honors in 2021.

With the opening weekend in the books, Wheeler leads the league with 4.60 kills per set posting 69 smashes, 13 more than any other player in league while hitting .226. She finished in double figures in each of the four matches with two double-doubles.

Coming out of the gates firing, the outside hitter tallied the seventh 20-kill match of her career smashing 22 balls to the ground on a .255 margin adding 10 digs in a four-set win over Alabama Huntsville, a 2021 NCAA Tournament team.

Hours later, she tallied 19 kills and 18 digs in a five-set setback to Trevecca on Friday night to complete the opening day of play in the Music City.

Hitting .316 to open action on Saturday, Wheeler tallied 19 kills and followed it up with 11 more in the finale of the weekend versus Christian Brothers.

The Eagles open SAC action on Tuesday night with a visit to Tusculum with first serve slated to start at 6 p.m. from Pioneer Arena.
