Wheeler adds sixth weekly honor with TSWA award

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Julia Wheeler needs to make room in the trophy case bringing home her sixth weekly honor of the year being named the Player of the Week by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Tuesday.

All told, the outside hitter's resume touts 11 career awards including eight weekly honors from the South Atlantic Conference and TSWA with this laurel marking the fourth different week she has earned at least one or the other.

In two matches for Carson-Newman, Wheeler tallied 33 kills and 17 digs with one double-double while hitting .310 adding a solo block and three block assists while scoring 35.5 points.

The Murfreesboro, Tenn. native produced her fourth 20-kill night of the year with 20 kills hitting .286 with six digs and a block assists at 21st-ranked Wingate on Friday. She followed up that performance with her team-leading 12th double-double of the year on Saturday registering a .355 hitting margin with 13 kills, 11 digs and a team-best two total blocks.

Wheeler, one of the best players in the country, ranks fifth nationally with 4.54 kills per set, seventh in points per set with 5.05 and ninth in total kills with 336. Her kills average would obliterate the current single-season school record of 4.17 set by Carly Mozgai in 2010.

For the year, the senior has been in double figures in 20 of the team's 21 matches in kills leading the team in all 20 of those affairs. Her .252 hitting percentage is nearly 70 points higher than a year ago with all of her numbers across the board increasing from her first year at Mossy Creek.

The Eagles return to SAC action on Tuesday welcoming Tusculum for a 6 p.m. first serve at Holt Fieldhouse. Fans can use their FloSports subscription or sign up for one to watch the every contest all season long. Follow along to @CN_Eagles on Twitter and Instagram for in-game updates.
