Eagles overpower Newberry, 6-1, on Senior Night to claim share of SAC title

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The Carson-Newman men's soccer team cruised to a 6-1 win over Newberry on Senior Night on Saturday in South Atlantic Conference play at McCown Field.

With the victory, the Eagles won a share of the SAC regular season title and improve to 11-4-1 overall and 8-1 in the conference. Newberry falls to 1-13-2 on the season and 0-8-1 in SAC play.

The Eagles controlled possession for a majority of the contest and finished the night with 22 shots, including nine on goal, while Newberry managed 10 shots with eight being on goal.

C-N struck first in the 27th minute, as Robert Hill (Middlesbrough, England) headed in a corner kick from senior Gustavo Jimenez (Alpharetta, Ga.) to give the Eagles a 1-nil lead.

Newberry answered in the 36th minute with a goal from Adrian Ochoa (East Point, Ga.), but it was all C-N after that. The Eagles scored two goals in a span of three minutes to close out the half. Jared Prall (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) finished off a pass from senior Richard Marquetty (New York, N.Y.) in the 40th minute, and Adam Thomas (Morristown, Tenn.) headed in a free kick from Ben Backstrom (Knoxville, Tenn.) in the 43rd minute to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead at the break.

Coming out of the locker room, C-N went back to work, as Backstrom scored a goal in the 47th minute off a pass in the box from Marquetty to give the Eagles a 4-1 cushion.

Luke Weemes (London, England) and Prall each delivered a goal in the second half to put the game out of reach.

Senior goalkeeper Jordan Moore (Hendersonville, Tenn.) collected six saves in the win.

The Eagles return to the pitch on Wednesday as they will host a first round match of the SAC Tournament.
