JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The Carson-Newman baseball team cruised past Newberry, 11-2, on Sunday afternoon to complete the series sweep at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex.

With the win, the Eagles improve to 7-6 overall and 4-2 in the South Atlantic Conference. Newberry falls to 9-8 on the season and 0-3 in conference play.

C-N remained hot at the plate as it pounded out 11 hits for the third-straight game. The Eagles have reached double digits in hits nine times this season.

Junior Evan Patterson (Knoxville, Tenn.) went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and four RBIs to lead C-N, while sophomore second baseman Aaron Vargas (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) added two hits in the win.

Senior reliever Ryan Hendrickson (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) picked up the win for the Eagles. Hendrickson (1-0) surrendered just one hit and struck out two batters in 2 1/3 innings of relief.

Newberry starting hurler Chris Love (Columbia, S.C.) fell to 2-2 on the season after allowing eight runs on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings of work. Love also had three walks and three strikeouts.

The scarlet and grey struck first by tallying a run in the top of the first inning on a RBI single by Patrick Regalado (Hialeah, Fla.), but the Eagles answered in the home half of the inning to take the lead for good with a five-run outburst.

Left fielder Jeff Lockwood (Knoxville, Tenn.) delivered a two-run single in the inning, while Derek Long (Jefferson City, Tenn.) added a run-scoring double and Corey Lamson (Gray, Tenn.) drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to left field. Catcher Lance Reed (Elizabethton, Tenn.) also contributed a RBI fielder’s choice in the inning.

Newberry pushed across another run in the fourth inning to trim C-N’s lead to 5-2, but the Eagles scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the game out of reach, highlighted by a two-run single by Patterson.

C-N’s bullpen took care of the rest to seal the win, allowing just three hits in 5 1/3 scoreless innings of work.

The Eagles return to the diamond on Wednesday at Belmont Abbey. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. in Belmont, N.C.
