Carson-Newman's Lockwood Named SAC Player of the Week

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Carson-Newman's Jeff Lockwood (Knoxville, Tenn.) has been named the South Atlantic Conference Baseball Player of the Week for the week ending March 21, league officials announced today.

Lockwood, who led the Eagles to a 5-1 week, batted .500 (11-for-22) in the six-game stretch with five home runs and 17 RBIs.

In C-N's midweek split with No. 17 North Georgia, Lockwood went 4-for-9 at the plate with two doubles and a home run. The senior outfielder capped off the week by going 5-for-9 with three home runs and 10 RBIs in the Eagles' sweep of Lenoir-Rhyne.

In C-N's doubleheader with the Bears on Saturday, he went 5-for-6 with three home runs and nine RBIs. Lockwood is batting .447 this season with 15 home runs and 43 RBIs.

Lockwood also gave the Eagles two quality outings on the mound. In C-N's 6-3 win over No. 17 North Georgia on Wednesday, he pitched a perfect ninth inning, striking out one batter to pick up his second save of the season. In Saturday's 11-1 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne, he scattered five hits across four innings in his first start, giving up one run and fanning five batters to move to 1-0 on the year.

Wingate's Chris Nelson garnered SAC Pitcher of the Week honors. Nelson, a junior left-hander from Greenville, N.C., tossed a three-hit shutout in Wingate's 2-0 win at Brevard Saturday afternoon. He struck out seven in the nine-inning victory, while walking only two. The three hits Nelson allowed were all singles. He is 3-0 on the season with a 2.92 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 24.2 innings of work.
