Eagles Overpower Anderson, 13-8

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The Carson-Newman baseball team pounded out 17 hits en route to a 13-8 victory over Anderson on Wednesday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex.

With the win, the Eagles improve to 15-8 on the season. Anderson falls to 8-19 overall.

Junior Evan Patterson (Knoxville, Tenn.) went 4-for-5 with two doubles and a triple in the leadoff spot to lead C-N. Junior Wesley Dozier (Cornelius, N.C.) tallied three hits, including a home run, while senior Mills Rogers (Simpsonville, S.C.) collected three hits.

Senior Jeff Lockwood (Knoxville, Tenn.) added two hits, including a three-run home run, in the win, while Corey Lamson (Gray, Tenn.) produced two base knocks.

The Trojans collected 13 hits on the day, including three each from sophomore Blake May (Largo, Fla.) and freshman Brett Scarberry (Sunrise, Fla.).

C-N starting pitcher Evan Faithful (Hingham, Mass.) picked up the win after 5 2/3 innings of work to improve his record 1-1. The freshman right-hander surrendered five runs on eight hits and had three strikeouts on the day.

Anderson took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI groundout by Thomas Padro (Hialeah, Fla.), but the Eagles answered with three runs off losing pitcher Kaleb Davis (0-1) in the home half of the second to take the lead for good.

Dozier delivered a two-run double in the inning and later scored when Patterson reached on a fielder's choice to give C-N a 3-1 lead.

Erick Sanderson (Hanahan, S.C.) produced an RBI single in the third to trim C-N's lead to 3-2.

However, the Eagles took control of the game in the fourth by erupting for four more runs, highlighted by Lockwood's three-run blast. The home run was Lockwood's 12th of the season.

C-N pushed its lead to 11-2 in the fifth behind RBI singles from Rogers and Lockwood and a two-run home run by Dozier.

The Trojans rallied to pull to within 11-8 in the eighth, but C-N reliever Ryan Fillers (Greeneville, Tenn.) struck out five batters in 2 1/3 innings of work to seal the win and earn his first save of the season.

The Eagles return to South Atlantic Conference play at home this weekend in a three-game series against Lenoir-Rhyne beginning on Friday with a single game at 2 p.m. C-N and the Bears will conclude the series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
