JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Pfeiffer Falcons used a seventh-run seventh inning to rally from an early 7-2 deficit and beat the Carson-Newman Eagles, 15-12, Wednesday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex.
With the win, Pfeiffer improves to 19-21 overall, while Carson-Newman falls to 23-9 and sees its 11-game win streak come to an end.
Will Davis hit a two-run home run and Zach Pou added a three-run double as the visiting Falcons built a 15-10 lead with a seven-run seventh inning. Pfeiffer was able to take advantage of a walk and two hit batsmen in the inning as the Eagle bullpen surrendered a combined 13 runs and 12 hits in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
The two teams combined for 31 hits and six home runs on the day.
The Eagles grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the first when Evan Patterson (Knoxville, Tenn.) drew a lead-off walk and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Lockwood (Knoxville, Tenn.).
C-N would build its lead to 2-0 an inning later when Wes Dozier (Cornelious, N.C.) doubled down the left field line and scored on a wild pitch.
Pfeiffer second baseman Josh Strickland tied the game at 2-2 with a two-run home run in the top of the third, but the Eagles would answer.
A four-run fourth, highlighted by three-straight, two-out singles by Corey Lamson (Gray, Tenn.), Dozier, and Jon Dalton (Rutledge, Tenn.) helped the Eagles build a 7-2 lead. C-N took advantage of an error, a walk, and a hit batter in the inning.
The Falcons would rally to take an 8-7 lead behind a pair of home runs.
Left fielder Eric Shoemaker hit a three-run home run in the fifth to cut the Eagles lead to 7-5. Shortstop Preston Lyon would add a two-run shot in the sixth to put Pfeiffer at the time.
The Eagles would answer with three runs in the bottom half of the sixth.
Lockwood led off the inning with his South Atlantic Conference leading 16th home run of the season, a line drive over the centerfield fence.
After a Lamson double, Dozier followed with his third hit of the day, a two-run home run to centerfield, to give the Eagles the lead back at 10-8, but the Falcons would answer with their seven-run seventh to put the game out of reach.
The Eagles would get two back in the eighth when Morgan Gregory (Nashville, Tenn.) and Lance Reed each pushed two-out doubles down the left field line. Lamson also singled and scored in the inning, part of his 3-for-3 day.
Carson-Newman returns to action Friday evening at Smokies’ Park in Kodak, Tenn. against Mars Hill College. First pitch is at 6 p.m. The Eagles and Lions will play a doubleheader Saturday at noon at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex in Jefferson City.
