Eagles Rally to Defeat Brevard, 15-13, in 10 Innings

BREVARD, N.C. — The Carson-Newman baseball team rallied from a seven-run deficit to defeat Brevard, 15-13, in 10 innings on Friday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference action at Gil Coan Field.

The Eagles trailed 7-0 through two innings of play but scrapped back to tie the game at 13 in the ninth inning on a two-run double by Jeff Lockwood (Knoxville, Tenn.). Freshman Lance Reed (Elizabethton, Tenn.) then drove in Wesley Dozier (Cornelius, N.C.) in the 10th with a single to center field for the decisive run.

With the victory, C-N improves to 21-8 on the season and 10-3 in the conference. Brevard falls to 6-19 overall and 1-15 in SAC play.

Junior reliever D.J. Ferguson (Jupiter, Fla.) sealed the win for the Eagles tossing two no-hit innings and striking out one batter. Ferguson improved to 5-1 on the season with the win.

The Eagles pounded out 17 hits on the day, including a 4-for-6 effort from senior Derek Long (Jefferson City, Tenn.). Long drove in three runs on the day. Lockwood delivered a pair of doubles and drove in four runs, while Evan Patterson (Knoxville, Tenn.), Mills Rogers (Simpsonville, S.C.), Tyler Davis (Carrolton, Ga.) and Dozier added two hits apiece. Senior Corey Lamson (Gray, Tenn.) produced a solo home run in the win.

Brevard tallied 22 hits in the loss. Jackie Corn led the way with a 5-for-5 day, including two doubles and a home run. Eric Reneger pitched in four hits, including a pair of doubles, while Stephen Mullis and Kellen Moman each delivered a home run in the loss.

Tornados reliever Shane Galloway (2-2) was tagged with the loss after surrendering five runs and eight hits in three innings of work.

C-N and the Tornados conclude the series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
