Eagles split with Montevallo to close 2010 season

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo baseball team (13-36) split with Carson-Newman College (31-18) this afternoon (May 1). UM won the first game 6-4 in 11 innings and fell in the nightcap 11-1.

Game 1: Montevallo 6, C-N 4 (11)

Sophomore Duston Daugherty (Hoover, Ala./Hoover) hit a two-run homerun in the bottom of the 11th in the first game to give the Falcons their first win in seven games.

The Falcons were led in the doubleheader by Luckie who went 3-for-6 at the plate with a double and a run scored. Sosebee went 2-for-6 with a run scored as well. Daugherty picked up two RBI to lead the team while Garcia, Jr. and freshman ChandlerTyree (Oxford, Ala./Oxford) had one RBI each.

Tapscott, Caraway and junior Kyle Butler (Powder Springs, Ga./McEachern) held the Eagles to just three hits in game one over 11 innings. Two Falcon errors allowed the Eagles to score their four runs as only one run was earned. Tapscott pitched the first 6.2 innings while striking out nine and walking just two. Caraway then took over and pitched 2.2 innings with three strikeouts and just one walk. He also held the Eagles to no hits. The final pitcher was Butler who went 1.2 innings with two strikeouts and a walk. Butler took home the extra inning win as his record improved to 2-4 on the season.

In the second game Aaron started the game and took home the loss as he pitched just one third of an inning. Johanson pitched the next 1.2 innings with a strikeout followed by McLeod who pitched 3.1 innings with a strikeout as well. Fields pitched the next 1.1 innings and had a strikeout followed by freshman Kevin Richardson (Hoover, Ala./Spain Park) who pitched just one third of an inning with one strikeout.

Game 2: C-N 11, Montevallo 1 (7)

Seniors Derek Long (Jefferson City, Tenn.) and Jeff Lockwood (Knoxville, Tenn.) each went 3-for-3 and combined for five RBIs as the Eagles thumped the Falcon in game two, 11-1.

Long had a pair of RBI singles and Lockwood homered and doubled to give the Eagles all the offense they needed to grab their 31st win.

Lockwood finishes the season with 20 home runs.

C-N junior Cody Nix (Cartersville, Ga.) added a two-run home run, while senior Mill's Rogers (Simpsonville, Tenn.) and junior Wesley Dozier (Cornelious, N.C.) each added two hits.

Michael Elliott, Ryan Fillers, and Chase Boruff all turned in scoreless innings of relief in their final appearances of the season. Fillers picked up the win to 2-0 on the season.
