Mohon ties school record for doubles in a game; Eagles split with Belmont Abbey

BELMONT, N.C. — Sophomore designated hitter Lucas Mohon (Glasgow, Ky.) tied a school record with three doubles in leading the Carson-Newman baseball team to a 10-4 victory in game one of Wednesday's doubleheader at Belmont Abbey. The Eagles fell, 4-1, in the second game, which was shortened to five innings due to darkness.

With the split, the Eagles are now 3-3 on the season, while Belmont Abbey moves to 4-2.

Mohon went 4-for-4 and drove in three runs to lead C-N in the first game. His three doubles tied former Eagle Gaines Cox's school record, which was set in 1993 against Elon.

As a team, C-N tallied 11 hits for the game, including two apiece from senior Cody Nix (Cartersville, Ga.) and junior Mason Guymon (Oak Ridge, Tenn.).

Belmont Abbey collected seven hits, as Kyle Buchanan and Joey Frabasile produced two hits apiece to lead the way.

C-N starting hurler Robby Thigpen (St. Petersburg, Fla.) picked up the win after giving up two earned runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings of work. Thigpen also had three strikeouts.

Freshman Lucas Watson (Gatlinburg, Tenn.) worked 1 2/3 innings and gave up one run on three hits to earn the save. He also fanned two batters.

Belmont Abbey reliever Forrest Buchanan (0-1) was tagged with the loss after surrendering three runs (one earned) in 1/3 of an inning on the mound.

The Eagles struck first in the top of the fourth, as Nix doubled, stole third and then scored on a Belmont Abbey throwing error to give C-N a 1-0 lead.

The Crusaders responded to take a 2-1 lead in the home half of the inning on a two-run single by Frabasile.

C-N didn't take long to regain the lead, as Kyle Koeneman (Seymour, Tenn.) came through with a RBI sacrifice fly and Mohon delivered a two-run double in the fifth to give the Eagles a 4-2 advantage.

After Belmont Abbey pulled to within 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles put the game away with a five-run outburst in the seventh. Mohon and Troy Zawadzki (Shrewsbury, Mass.) each produced a RBI double, while Guymon delivered a two-run single. Senior Evan Patterson (Knoxville, Tenn.) also added a RBI sacrifice fly, scoring Aaron Vargas (Oak Ridge, Tenn.).

In the second game, the Eagles managed just four hits and committed six errors, which led to three of the Crusaders' four runs.

Zawadzki finished with one hit and a RBI to lead the Eagles.

Belmont Abbey finished with just three hits, including a 2-for-2 effort from Tim Dye.

C-N starter Tyler Cuming (Red Bank, N.J.) was hit with the loss after giving up one earned run and two hits in two innings of work.

Belmont Abbey starting hurler Taylor West (1-0) lasted all five innings to earn the victory. West allowed one run on four hits and struck out three batters.
