GVSU rallies off of Eagle miscues for win, 6-4

GREENWOOD, S.C. – Grand Valley State University (Mich.) scored four unearned runs as part of a four-run sixth inning to knock off the Carson-Newman Eagles, 6-4, Friday afternoon in Greenwood, S.C.

With the win, GVSU opens its season 1-0, while the Eagles fall to 3-3 on the year.

Grand Valley State grabbed a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when left fielder Steve Anderson roped a two-run homer to left field, scoring himself and Cody Grice, who reached after being hit by a pitch from Eagle starter Alex Britt (Salisbury, N.C.).

The Eagles' would cut the Lakers 2-0 lead in half in the third on a Lucas Mohon (Glasgow, Ky.) home run to left field, his first home run of the season.

Carson-Newman plated three more runs in the fourth inning as the Eagles strung together three hits and a Lakers' error to grab a 4-2 lead.

Third baseman Wes Dozier (Cornelious, N.C.) doubled to left to lead off the inning and later scored on an error by Lakers' shortstop Andrew Trepel on a Kyle Koeneman (Seymour, Tenn.) grounder. 

Back-to-back singles by Jon Dalton (Rutledge, Tenn.) and Evan Patterson (Knoxville, Tenn.) would send the Eagles to their first lead of the game. Patterson's two-RBI single was the big blow of the inning to score Koeneman and Dalton.

The Lakers would rally with a decisive four-run sixth.

After Britt induced a fly ball from pinch hitter Blake Batteast to open the inning, Cody Grice got thing starter for GVSU with a single to center.

Anderson would follow with a strike out against Eagle reliever Ryan Fillers (LP, 0-2)to set up a one-on, two-out situation, but the GVSU strung together three singles around a pair of errors by Dozier to jump ahead for good.

Carson-Newman returns to action Saturday morning against Mount Olive College at 11 a.m. at Legions Field.
