Tusculum comes to town for clash with the home-standing Eagles

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.—The Eagles are set to be back in action at home Tuesday afternoon by welcoming arch-rival Tusculum to the Buddy Catlett Tennis Complex as Carson-Newman eyes its first South Atlantic Conference win of the early season.

C-N (1-3, 0-1 SAC) will look to make it two wins in a row as the team welcomes a Pioneer club (7-0, 1-0 SAC) who will be participating in their second SAC matchup of the season, when play commences Tuesday afternoon.

Tusculum picked up a win in its SAC lid-lifter over the weekend (2/27) as the Pioneers took care of bisiness on the road 7-2 in a contest at Lenoir-Rhyne.

Tusculum earned three wins back in October during the NCAA mandated session where matches could be played in the fall sector. The victories came with a 9-0 sweep over Virginia-Wise, an 8-1 win versus Mars Hill and a 7-2 rout of King and have continued the good play on into the spring season.  

The squad that holds court just 45 minutes northeast on I-81 from Mossy Creek was picked as the third-best team when the SAC released its preseason poll prior to the start of the season. Tusculum also received two first placed-votes when the selection process endured.  

The Pioneers also showcase three preseason All-SAC selections on the year with Leon Seiz and Tashique representing the squad as a first team doubles paring. Seiz, along with Jonas Winkleman, were also were tabbed to the singles team after going a combined 30-7 a season ago.

Winkleman is the lone senior on the roster for a Tusculum club that has a fairly balanced sample size of age this season. The Pioneers also field two freshmen and juniors, as well as three sophomores.

Carson-Newman will be looking to compete in both singles and doubles play for the entirely of the match on Tuesday. The Eagles began the season averaging just one point per match in the early going but have come on of late after taking down Southern Wesleyan over the weekend (2/27) 7-2.
