HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Chelsea Passmore (Knoxville, Tenn.) shot a career best 73 (+1) to pace Carson-Newman to a fifth place finish after day one of the Lander Lady Bearcat Invitational Saturday morning in Hilton Head, S.C. Passmore finished the day in a tie for third, and a stroke off the lead.
Carson-Newman shot 309 as a team. After two consecutive tournaments of shaky starts, the 309 is Carson-Newman's lowest first round score as a team.
"Hard work is paying off from practice the last two weeks," Carson-Newman head women's golf coach Suzanne Strudwick said. "We'll work to keep the same mental toughness tomorrow."
The Eagles are even with Armstrong Atlantic. C-N finished in front of conference mates Queens, Wingate and Coker.
C-N sits 15 strokes away from first place Flagler, but the Eagles are eight away from second place UNC Pembroke.
Meridith Hawkins finished in a tie for 21st with a 77 (+5), for her fifth sub-80 round of the season.
Kelli Pemberton turned in a first round 79 (+7) in her first competition since the Smokey Mountain Intercollegiate. Danielle Baiunco rounded out the scoring for the Eagles with an 80 (+8).
The Eagles finish play Sunday morning in Hilton Head.
