Eagles hold steady at Flager Fall Slam

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Carson-Newman's women's golf team improved eight shots in the final round of the Flager Fall Slam to finish in front of three South Atlantic Conference teams in the field of 14.

The Eagles came in 10th following a 325 for the second round.

Chelsea Passmore (Knoxville, Tenn.) wound up as Carson-Newman's top finisher for the second time this season.  The junior came in a tie for 28th following a second round 82 (+10).  She was 17-over par for the tournament following a 79 in the opening round.

"Everyone did much better today," Carson-Newman  head women's golf coach Suzanne Strudwick said. "It's always good to finish with a lower team score on the second day.  We look forward to the winter break knowing what we have to do to get better to prepare for the spring."

Lauren Hodge (Jefferson City, Tenn.) showed the biggest jump from day one to day two. The senior improved 11 strokes to shoot the Eagles' only sub-80 round of day two with a 78 (+6).  She finished in 45th at 23-over for the tournament.

Hodge was four strokes back of Meridith Hawkins who was 19-over for the weekend. Hawkins, who battled a stomach bug throughout the week, gutted out an 83 (+11) on the second day to finish in a tie for 35th

Danielle Baiunco (Melbourne, Fla.) jumped up four shots on the second day to wind up with a two-day 168 (+24) after an 82 to finish a stroke behind Hodge in a tie for 46th.   Baiunco had to cope with a turned ankle on the second day of the tournament.

Mary Tunnell (Cordova, Tenn.) also seemed to get lumped into the cornucopia of maladies that C-N's women's golfers had to overcome at the tournament.  Much like Hawkins, Tunnell had to combat stomach issues through the event.  She finished in a tie for 54th after an 84 (+12) on the second day of the tournament.

Jessica Hart competed as an individual and came in 48th after an 83 (+11) on day two.

"It was nice to see her have a good showing," Strudwick said. "Especially with her being a freshman."

The Flagler Fall Slam closes out the Eagles' fall schedule, they resume competition in the spring.
