Eagles jump two spots in spite of tough conditions at Armstrong Pirate Women’s Invite

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Carson-Newman's women's golfers battled sub-40 degree temperatures and wind chills below 30 degrees and still managed to climb to eighth in the final standings of the Armstrong Pirate Women's Invite.

The Eagles shot a combined 674 for the two-day event and wound up tied with Southwest Oklahoma State. Armstrong Atlantic won the event for a second year in a row with a 619.

"Tough day again," C-N head women's golf coach Suzanne Strudwick said. "It was cold and windy.  The weather really affected their confidence coming into this event.

"We now must evaluate where we need to make our weaknesses into strengths. We have three weeks to get prepared to achieve goals. We wont to win our next event and finish top three in conference."

Kelli Pemberton finished 21st after a round two 82 (+10) for C-N. Both she and Danielle Baiunco saw their scores climb a shot under the increasingly difficult conditions from day one to day two. Baiunco wound up in a tie for 28ths with a two day 165.

Mary Tunnell finished two back of Baiunco in a tie for 33rd with a two-day 167. Tunnell's round two 82 was the second best round of the tournament for the Eagles.

Carson-Newman takes a month off before competing in the Tusculum Invitational to begin April.
