Lady Eagles close out day one of Flagler Fall Slam

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Carson-Newman women's golf wrapped up day one of the Flagler Fall Slam by finishing in front of three South Atlantic Conference schools at the Marsh Creek Country Club in St. Augustine, Fla.

The Eagles are 10th for the tournament following a team 333 but stand in front of Anderson, Tusculum and Catawba.

Chelsea Passmore (Knoxville, Tenn.) – a native of Florida – shot a team best 79 (+7) to finish in a tie for 22ndMeridith Hawkins (Powell, Tenn.) was a shot back of her in a tie for 30th.

"We struggled again trusting the hard work we have put in this season into executing consistently," Carson-Newman head women's golf coach Suzanne Strudwick said. "There was lots of stuff to be proud of.  The effort is there and they just have to trust that the skills and talent they have is good."

Strudwick said the day was a tough one for her players. Hawkins and Mary Tunnell (Cordova, Tenn.) battled stomach bugs, while Danielle Baiunco (Melbourne, Fla.) turned an ankle on the driving range.  Tunnell shot an 88 (+16) and Baiunco an 86 (+14). 

Jessica Hart (Roanoke, Va.) competed as an individual and shot an 86 (+14) to finish in a tie for 52nd.

"It has been our history this season that they'll come out and do better tomorrow," Strudwick said. "We had a great practice round with solid swings and short game.  We just have to pick it up a bit tomorrow."

The Eagles tee off at 8:54 a.m. Tuesday to conclude play at the event.
