Throughout the 2016 volleyball season, freshman middle blocker Alex Biro (Ootlewah, Tenn.) will write about her experiences at Carson-Newman with the volleyball program. A new installment will be released each Monday afternoon.
Just as I was about to type my first word, I looked down at the corner of my laptop and saw that today is September 12th, exactly one month since move-in day! It's crazy to think that we have been here for only 31 days, you wouldn't know it by seeing how close we all are with each other.
After three weeks or so of learning new things and having loads of fun, we made our charter bus trek to Pensacola to face four of the best teams in the country. The scores may not show it, but I (along with everyone else) was so proud of how hard we played. Especially for us freshmen, I think I speak for all of us when I say that that was some of the highest competition we had ever played.
But we pushed hard and came back to good ole Jeff City with some great experiences and the will to get better with every point. Another week of school, workouts, practices, and semi-sufficient sleep, we got to Friday, the day of our home opener against Mars Hill. Following tradition, us freshies dressed up as the Scooby-Doo crew (minus Elena, who was and still is doing a great job of recovering from her ACL surgery!! We love you girl!). I channeled my middle school self and busted out my glasses to be Velma, Marnie donned a Scooby onesie, and let's just say that we are now very familiar with the local Goodwill.
Having a home game was fun in high school, but it was nothing like Friday night. Constant energy, music and a great group of Eagles to keep us excited made everything better. We simply did our job: sticking to our fundamentals, staying aggressive and valuing each ball, and most importantly, competing for each point. And with that, we earned a sweep, our first conference AND season win. Tomorrow, Tuesday the 13th, we have in-state rival LMU, and I know if we stick to what we know, it will be a great match. So everyone come out to Holt Fieldhouse at 7 pm and get ready to THROW THEM TALONS UP!!!
