Biro's Breakdown: October 19, 2016

Throughout the 2016 volleyball season, freshman middle blocker Alex Biro (Ootlewah, Tenn.) will write about her experiences at Carson-Newman with the volleyball program. A new installment will be released each Monday afternoon.

What a packed 10 days we've had! Coming off a weekend win at Brevard had us ready to work hard in practice. Monday was a special day… one of our own had a family emergency, and the team's response was immediate. Practice was cancelled, everyone wrote out notes, and some of the girls rallied together to pay her a visit and provide love and support. Thankfully, everything is looking very positive with her family and we all hope that it will continue to get better and better!

We came back into the gym Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to prep for our Peach Belt/SAC Crossover tournament. This week was coupled with a bunch of midterms and tests for everyone, and I think all the results were positive! Managing school and sport can be a challenge sometimes, especially with your comfy bed lingering in the back of your mind. Our athlete study hall, SNAP, helps us freshmen especially to time manage and get our work done within a reasonable time. This way we aren't up even later trying to do work late at night.

We were all very excited for the weekend because almost everyone's families payed a visit… for some it was the third or fourth time seeing their family, and for others it was the first time since move in day! It was nice to see everyone make time for their loved ones.

Friday was day one of play, which we played Lander and Augusta. Lander really retaliated with some spot-on defense, and it forced us hitters to try out some shots we maybe don't do that often. Those shots helped a great deal in our game against Augusta, which was long and hard fought, and resulted in A WIN!!!! It was such a good game and it really showed us our potential as hitters, blockers, servers, and passers. Saturday saw some tough competition from USC Aiken and Georgia College.  The GC match was fun, two tough teams going head to head for almost every point. Although we came up short in the end, this weekend shed a lot of hope for the rest of our season.

After Sunday's day or rehab and Monday's practice, we made the trek up to LMU for our first match of the second half. A tough and aggressive LMU team got the best of us but that only gives us something to strive for in practice. This weekend we'll see Anderson and Newberry at home, 7 pm on Friday and 5 pm on Saturday. We hope to see you all there!!

Have a great week!
