Female Freshman of the Year

Blake Cherry (Volleyball)

In her first year of collegiate volleyball, Cherry displayed versatility as a six-rotation outside hitter. The Cookeville, Tenn. native is the 10th player in Mossy History lineage to be named an all-freshman selection. Cherry stuffed the stat sheet this year with 1.72 kills per set, 3.21 digs per set, 29 service aces and 26 total blocks. The outside hitter registered seven double-digit kills matches. The rookie's greatest asset has proved to be her defense with 19 efforts of double-digit digs including 14 of the last 17 leading the team in the area in four contests. Her 379 digs are the most by a Carson-Newman true freshman since Taylor Lowe, who is third on the program's career list, racked up 473 as a rookie in 2013.

Campbell Penland (Basketball)

Making a big impact from the moment she stepped on campus, Penland scored in double figures in each of her first three contests and in seven of her 12 career efforts. The rookie has spent much of the first semester in the top 50 among all Division II players in three-pointers made closing out the first semester with 11 points, five rebounds and two assists per game. In a road win at UVA Wise, the Volunteer State native posted a season-high 17 points while she set her best effort on the glass in a rout of Mars Hill on Dec. 15 yanking down a dozen caroms.

Nellie Bryneus (Soccer)

Nellie Bryneus finished her first season from Mossy Creek as an All-SAC third-team selection. Made 16 starts and appearances in her debut season. Bryneus netted the second-most goals for C-N with six, including scoring a goal only 33 seconds in against Anderson. This was the first time an Eagle had scored in the first minute since September 2019. Bryneus compiled a team-leading four assists, including one on the game-winner against Newberry. Fired off 50 shots, second-most on the team, with 25 shots on goal to lead the team in that regard.

Sydnee Duncan (Soccer)

Sydnee Duncan wrapped up her first season along the banks of Mossy Creek as an All-SAC third-team selection. Duncan made 17 appearances with 13 spots in the starting XI for C-N. Led the team with eight goals, eighth-most in the SAC. Compiled a hat trick against Coker, becoming the first Eagle to score a hat trick since October 2018 as well as becoming the first Eagle to compile six points in a match since September 2018. Gathered four total game-winners, including a SAC leading three game winners against Mars Hill, Newberry, and Coker. Tied for the team lead with 16 points to go along with the fourth-most shots with 36 and second-most shots on goal with 18.

Ashley Holland (Golf)

Ashley Holland made her collegiate golf debut in the fall of 2021 for the Carson-Newman squad. She was able to make an instant impact on the course for the Lady Eagles, shooting a cool 237 at the UIndy fall invite, and a 161 at the Jekyll Island Intercollegiate.

Caroline Nemes (Golf)

Caroline Nemes was another instant impact for Coach Kelsey Hutson and the Lady Eagles this fall, and she was able to record solid rounds in every one of her appearances. Her best performance came at the Savannah Lakes Fall Invitational, where she finished with a 154. She finished the fall with an average of 79.4
