JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman Track & Field coach David Needs has announced the release of the 2018-19 tentative schedule for the indoor and outdoor seasons.
It's a healthy schedule for the program who comes off arguably one of the most historic seasons in its history which included multiple All-American athletes and a National Champion in Tanner Stepp during the indoor season.
Despite dealing with injuries that hampered the opportunity for a number of athletes to join in the trips to nationals, C-N returns Kieran Showler-Davis and Devon Moore, two sprinters who were standouts in the 60-meter dash. Both would collect All-America honors following the indoor campaign while Showler-Davis went on to collect the award following the outdoor season in the 100-meter dash. Moore was shelved due to an injury.
"Instantly having those guys back they already make you a great team," Needs said. "We have some athletes that are really close in Samantha Gudger, Shelby Reynolds, James Wilson, Jahvad McDermott, James Wilson, Tia Davis… We are really excited and really think we have the makings of a strong team this year."
The Eagles kick off their season on Dec. 1 for the second straight year with a trip once again to Roanoke College for the Bast-Cregger Invitational, a meet in which C-N immediately broke a number of school records in 2017.
C-N will also return to Johnson City, Tenn. multiple times throughout the year as well as the JDL Fast Track in Winston Salem, N.C. where the South Atlantic Conference Championships will also be held for the indoor season.
There is a new format for the league this season for the SAC championship meets with the indoor taking place over a two-day period and the outdoor championships over a three-day period, similar to the format in which the NCAA uses.
"It's better for some of those athletes and it still tests their endurance," Needs said. "Our intentions in the conference are to mirror those NCAA meets and it gives the opportunity for our league and its athletes to really excel."
Needs' team will also return to Western Carolina where they will test its mettle against various Division I schools, as well as an invite to the University of Tennessee. C-N also picked up an invite to Lenoir-Rhyne which is expected to be one of their biggest meets of the campaign.
Needs returns for his 22nd season as a coach at C-N as he will be joined by Tyler Stepp for the fifth-straight year as an assistant. The newest addition to the staff Eric Phillips is expected to lead the group of long-distance runners following the cross country season.
