C-N leaves Lenoir-Rhyne with victories in nine events

HICKORY, N.C. - With its first meet of the 2019 outdoor season in the books, Carson-Newman Track & Field continued to post strong marks with four victories in day two of the Southside Power & Fitness Invitational at Lenoir-Rhyne.

Samantha Gudger took home the top spot in the long jump clearing 5.72 meters just .05 meters short of a career-best. The early mark for Gudger has her tied for third in all of Division II. Shelby Reynolds turned in a fourth-place mark at 5.12 meters.

Tiffany Noe earned a third-place mark in the high jump after clearing 1.55 meters and also competed in the aforementioned long jump with a seventh-place finish at 5.03 meters.

Ray Artybidge grabbed the win for C-N on the men's side in the event with a leap of 6.98 meters which currently sits in the top-10 in the nation. James Wilson and Kristofer Potts-Howard weren't far behind with fourth and fifth-place finishes with jumps of 6.72 and 6.70 meters.

Caleb Agee was a member of C-N's four wins on the day after a run of 55.32 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles, an event in which he won the conference championship in 2018. On the women's side, Holly Talbut-Smith competed in her first outdoor meet in two years with a sixth-place finish at 1:10.42.


The fourth win and second of her weekend came from Tia Davis who grabbed the No. 1 position in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.50 seconds, a day after grabbing the victory in the 100-meter event. Abby Hegarty (26.06) and Amanda Lowe (26.77) checked in with third and sixth-place finishes respectively. The time for Davis marked a new personal-best.

Other notable runs included Klara Naude who had a third-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:25.74.

Trayzel Jureidini-Wyche began the day with a second-place finish for the Eagles in the discus throw clearing 43.84 meters. Teammate Logan Pender rounded out the top-seven in the event with a throw of 40.33 meters.

"Certainly had some great days for our kids," Coach Tyler Stepp said. "We had a few wins again today with some encouraging marks. Overall the team effort was really phenomenal especially driving back and forth to the meet. Hopefully, this weekend is a sign of good things to come and we can catch up on some training and rest up before we really hit it at the Montreat Invitational in two weeks."
